An elegant 19th century ducal mansion built on the Castle Rock high above the city, by the Duke of Newcastle. It is surrounded by a beautiful Victorian park and provides spectacular views across the city and surrounding landscape.
The Castle site has had a turbulent past and is rich in historical importance. In 1067 William The Conqueror built a wooden castle on the site, which was later rebuilt in stone by Henry II (of which the Castle Keep still remains today) and became one of the four most important castles in the land. After riots, Civil War and a great fire, it was restored and opened as the first municipal museum outside of London in 1878. Today it houses historical and contemporary collections of fine art, silver, ceramics and glass.
