Economic impact

· During the financial year 2006/07, SECC hosted 244 events and attracted some 1.29 million visitors**, an estimated 30,000 exhibitors and 5,000 technical exhibitors (stand contractors) · 25% of SECC visitors came from Glasgow, 63% from the rest of Scotland, 8% from the rest of the UK and 4% from overseas. · 93% of delegates attending international conferences and 87% of delegates attending national conferences came from outwith Scotland · Events at SECC sustain over 1.5% of total Glasgow employment · Over 57% of the net additional expenditure in Glasgow was generated by public events. · Over 57% of the net additional expenditure in Scotland was generated by national and international conferences. · Visitors, exhibitors and organisers spent £77 million on accommodation, £73 million on meals, food and drink and £68 million on shopping in Glasgow. · SECC is proposing to build a new National Arena. It is estimated that the Arena will generate a further £135 million for Glasgow’s economy each year, sustaining an additional 2,574 jobs in the city. · Since opening in 1985, it is estimated that the events staged at SECC have injected well over £2 billion into the economy of Glasgow. · 22% of international conference delegates brought an accompanying person with them to Glasgow who did not attend the conference
